Kosher Browser + ShomerDNS: Two Layers of Protection That Work Together

No single filter does everything. We say that often about ShomerDNS too: it’s very good at stopping whole websites and services before they reach any device, but there are things that happen inside a web page that a network filter can’t see. That’s why we’re happy to point families towards Kosher Browser, a free filtering extension for Chrome and Firefox, with a separate Android app. It fills in exactly those gaps.

Here’s what each tool does, where each one falls short, and why we think the best setup is ShomerDNS as the foundation with Kosher Browser on top.

What Is Kosher Browser?

Kosher Browser (דפדפן כשר) is a content filter that lives in your browser. It’s fully bilingual: it opens in Hebrew if your browser is set to Hebrew and in English otherwise. Its main features include:

  • Three protection levels (Basic, Kosher and Strict / Mehadrin), switched with one click.
  • A built-in list of about 30,000 adult sites that can’t be turned off, plus optional categories such as social networks, video, news, shopping and gambling.
  • YouTube control: allow it, block it, remove Shorts only, or allow approved channels only.
  • Safe search enforced on Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo.
  • Word filtering that hides posts containing chosen words, plus optional image and video hiding.
  • Child profiles with age-based filtering, daily time limits, rest hours and a 4-digit code.
  • Focus sessions of 15 to 120 minutes, and ad and tracker blocking.

Settings stay on your device, with no account and no telemetry. It installs from the Chrome Web Store, Firefox Add-ons and Google Play, and itand Google Play, and the Android app is free with no ads or in-app purchases.rsquo;s completely free: no subscription, no ads and no in-app purchases.

Where a Browser Filter Stops

Kosher Browser does a lot inside the browser, but by design it only covers the browser it’s installed in:

  • Apps aren’t covered. TikTok, Instagram, games, chat apps and anything else with its own app don’t go through a browser extension.
  • Other browsers aren’t covered. If a second browser is installed, the extension isn’t in it.
  • It can be removed. Kosher Browser’s own site is upfront about this: Strict mode locks its own settings, but the extension can still be disabled or removed from the browser’s add-ons page.
  • No iPhone or iPad version.

None of this is a criticism. It’s simply what a browser extension is. It just means a browser filter works best when something underneath it covers everything else.

Why ShomerDNS Should Be the Foundation

🌐

Every App, Every Browser

ShomerDNS filters at the network level, so it applies to every app and every browser on the device — including the ones a browser extension never sees.

📱

iPhone, iPad and Beyond

It works on iPhone, iPad, Android and computers — any device you can point at ShomerDNS or connect to the ShomerDNS VPN.

🔒

Nothing to Uninstall

There’s no extension to switch off. With the ShomerDNS VPN, the filtering sits on our server, not in an app setting on the phone.

🆕

Completely Free

ShomerDNS is a free, non-commercial community service. There’s no subscription, no account and no premium tier.

What Kosher Browser Adds on Top

A DNS filter decides on whole domains: a site is either reachable or it isn’t. Kosher Browser can work inside a site that you’ve chosen to allow, which ShomerDNS can’t do:

  • YouTube by channel. ShomerDNS can block YouTube completely; Kosher Browser can allow approved channels only, or remove Shorts.
  • Words and images. Hiding posts that contain certain words, or hiding images and video, happens within the page.
  • Time and schedules. Daily limits, rest hours and focus sessions are about when the browser is used, not just what it can reach.

Our Recommended Setup

  1. Start with ShomerDNS on every device in the home, ideally with the ShomerDNS VPN on phones so the protection travels with them and can’t simply be switched off. This covers all apps, all browsers and every device.
  2. Add Kosher Browser to Chrome or Firefox on computers, and the Kosher Browser app on Android, for children who need finer control: approved YouTube channels, word filtering and screen-time limits.
  3. Use each tool for what it does best. Let ShomerDNS block whole sites and services everywhere. Let Kosher Browser shape what’s shown on the sites you’ve decided to allow.

If Kosher Browser is ever removed or a different browser is opened, ShomerDNS is still there underneath. Together they cover more than either one does alone.

Ready to Get Started?

Set up ShomerDNS first — it takes a few minutes on any device. Then add Kosher Browser for extra control inside the browser.
