The VPN Misconception — And Why ShomerDNS Is Different

Search “VPN” in any app store and you’ll find dozens of apps promising privacy, security, and protection — often for a monthly fee. Many families sign up for one of these thinking it will keep harmful content off their devices. It won’t. A VPN, on its own, does not filter anything. Understanding what a VPN actually does is the key to understanding why the ShomerDNS VPN works completely differently — and why it’s the one you actually need.

What a Commercial VPN Actually Does

• It hides your IP address from the sites you visit. Useful for privacy, but it has nothing to do with what content reaches your screen.
• It encrypts traffic between you and the VPN provider. This stops your internet provider from seeing your traffic — but the VPN provider can now see it instead.
• It can change your apparent location. This is why people use VPNs to access streaming content from other countries.
• It does not block harmful content by default. Unless a VPN specifically advertises filtering as a feature, plugging into one changes where your traffic is routed, not what you’re allowed to see.

In other words, a typical VPN moves the trust from your internet provider to the VPN company — it doesn’t add any protection on its own. Some VPN providers even log and sell browsing data themselves, which is the opposite of what most families are looking for.

There’s also a simpler point that gets lost in VPN marketing: if you don’t need to change your apparent location, most of what you’re browsing is already encrypted. The vast majority of the web now runs on HTTPS — you’ll see the padlock icon in your browser on almost every site. HTTPS already encrypts the content of what you’re sending and receiving, so a VPN “encrypting your traffic” is mostly re-encrypting something that’s already protected. The only thing left exposed to your internet provider is which sites you’re connecting to, not what you’re doing on them — and that’s a metadata concern, not a content one.

That’s a real difference from DNS. Every device — even over HTTPS — still has to ask a DNS resolver “where is this website?” before it can connect. Unless that DNS query is itself encrypted (as it is with ShomerDNS’s DNS-over-TLS), it’s the one part of your browsing that’s still sitting there in plain text for anyone on the network to see. That’s the actual gap worth closing — not re-wrapping web traffic that’s already encrypted.

The Misconception

The confusion comes from the word “VPN” being used for two very different things:

1. A privacy/location tool — the kind advertised for streaming and anonymity.
2. A private network tunnel to a specific filtered resolver — which is what ShomerDNS uses.

ShomerDNS doesn’t route you through a commercial VPN company or change your apparent location.
